This article is concerned with rheological analyses of special effect development (flop) in aqueous pearlescent/coloured pigment systems. In order to assess the effect quantitatively, a so-called flop index was calculated by measuring the brightness values L* of painted panels as a function of the gloss angle difference. In order to reveal correlations between measurable physical parameters and the observed effect, the rheologically measured values for storage modulus G', phase shift δ, yield point and viscosity were compared with the values of the flop index. The results show good correlations between the observable effect and the rheological parameters of the liquid paint. |
