Résumé : |
The results of the research reported in this document support the hypothesis that potassium chloride can successfully replace sodium chloride for the preservation of animal hides and skins. The use of either of these salts results in a stable hide or skin that can be converted into leather many months after curing. They both also produce a gallon of saturated salt solution from each cattle hide (or equivalent weight of skin) as a by-product of the preservation. In the case of sodium chloride this is a difficult and often expensive effluent to dispose of in an environmentally sound manner. The same by-product containing potassium chloride is a valuable and easily disposable fertilizer solution. While some minor differences were observed in the potassium chloride cured hides during the tanning process, these differences did not appear to have any negative effect on the final product. |
