Heavy metal-based corrosion inhibitors were widely acclaimed as the best materials to provide corrosion protection to coatings. The performance of a coating under corrosive conditions requires that corrosion inhibitors provide reliable and sustainable protection during the coatings lifetime. Today, the industry is challenged to be more conscious of the impact that toxic metals have on human health and on other ecosystems. Sol-gel technology offers an eco-friendly alternative to the use of toxic metals (Cr VI, Cd, Pb, Cu, Ni, and Zn). This article highlights research in new sol-gel based corrosion inhibitors for use in paint as well as for use in the pretreatment of bare metals (e.g., steel, aluminum, silver). Sol-gel technology particularly affords superior corrosion protection in thin film coatings (< 25 µm dry), an area that up to now has been dominated by Cr-based anticorrosives. This technology is applicable to most waterborne and solventborne finishes, high gloss direct-to-metal coatings, conventional primers, acrylic clearcoats, fast drying lacquers, wash primers, anti-fingerprint, and conversion coatings. Titre : Improving the performance of painted wood siding : rain screen, end-grain seal, and back priming Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Edward Burke, Auteur ; Tony Bonura, Auteur ; Charles Carll, Auteur ; Dennis Connelly, Auteur ; Doug Mall ; Arnie Nebelsick ; Norm Slavik ; Brent Stuart ; Alex Wiedenhoeft ; R. Sam Williams Année de publication : 2009 Article en page(s) : p. 30-33 Langues : Américain (ame) Catégories : Bois -- Revêtements protecteurs Index. décimale : 667.6 Peintures Résumé : Moisture control is a critical means of improving the performance of solid-color stain and paint on wood siding. In this article, recommendations are given for constructing a rain screen, sealing the end grain, and back-priming siding to achieve this goal. Rain screen construction and back priming inhibit water absorption and bleeds from run-down extractives if water gets behind the siding. Inhibiting water absorption improves dimensional stability of siding, thus improving finish performance. Sealing the end grain with primer decreases paint peeling and bleeding of diffuse extractives near the end of boards. These techniques should be used in combination with structure designs having adequate roof overhangs, ground clearance to bottom course of siding, roof-edge flashing, gutters, and downspouts.
