We recently developed an environmentally friendly finishing process for improving the UV- and heat resistance of chrome-free leather. We previously reported and demonstrated some promising results from coating tocopherol, a natural antioxidant, onto the grain layer of leather. Tocopherol (Vitamin E) is a potent free radical scavenger and highly protective agent for collagen fibers against UV damage. This antioxidant has improved the UV- and heat resistance of the leather product. To help prevent over-drying, glycerol, a humectant, is added to tocopherol to not only maintain proper moisture content, but also to improve the UV and heat resistance of leather. The mixture of glycerol and tocopherol is applied as an emulsion with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), as an emulsifying agent and coated the grain layer of that leather. Following exposure in a Fade-ometer, the treated samples were evaluated by colorimetric and mechanical testing for the efficacy of UV- and heat resistance. Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The length of time needed for brine curing of raw hides and skins, a minimum of 18 h, is a time consuming process. In this paper we initially report the results of an investigation of the stratigraphic distribution of sodium chloride and water in fleshed hides cured for varying intervals of time. We demonstrated that salt entered the hide mainly from the flesh side. Water, on the other hand, was withdrawn from both sides of the hide; the epidermis acted as a semipermeable membrane. Three commercial degreasers as well as a glycolipid surfactant (sophorolipid) were tested as brine curing additives and their efficiency evaluated according to the moisture, salt, salt saturation and fat content levels in the brine cured hide. One of the commercial degreasers, when used at 0.5% w/w, significantly removed fat from the hide as well as enhanced the uptake of salt. The sophorolipid also was an effective degreasing agent, decreasing the fat content of the brine-cured hide and, if used in excess, significantly increasing the uptake of salt. The data presented here confirmed that the usage of an appropriate degreasing agent in the brine is a suitable option for reducing the turn-around times in raceways and thus creating additional curing capacity. Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Waste fat produced by tanneries during the processes in which raw hide is transformed into leather represents a very important raw material for biodiesel production. Under laboratory and pilot-scale conditions, biodiesel samples were prepared from waste tannery fat and required analyses were carried out. The process of biodiesel production has three stages: 1) refining melting of the raw material (separation of fats from other undesirable components), 2) organic base-catalyzed methanolysis and 3) separation of glycerin layer. The mathematical model of zonal refining melting is presented in this paper as well as the results of the refining and methanolysis product analyses. The use of organic bases (tetramethylammonium hydroxide, n-butylamine, cyclohexylamine, etc.) is innovative. It enables us, in addition to considerable financial benefits, to produce a high quality biodiesel and glycerin containing practically no ash. Further, it contains a residual amine that works as a stabilizer, and after methanolysis the amine can be partially recycled. Environmental concern leads one to seek dye products based on natural resources, which have several advantages like less toxicity, biodegradability, etc. The research work presented in this paper focuses on an eco-friendly dyeing process of the leather using aqueous henna leaves extract that contain lawsone, 2-hydroxy 1,4 naphthaquinone, the most prominent member of alpha – hydroxynaphthaquinone, natural dye class. The aqueous extraction from the henna leaves was studied and the best extraction conditions were found to be the maceration of the ground henna leaves in water, at temperature (> 80°C) for 60 minutes in a water bath without agitation. The color of the leather had become deeper with increasing amount of henna extract and multiple colors have been obtained depending on the type of mordants used. The henna dyeing had resulted in leathers with good rub (dry and wet) and perspiration fastness characteristics, while the light fastness characteristics were found to be moderate.
