VioletIndex. décimale : 667.2 Colorants et pigments Résumé : From cave paintings of the 6th and 7th Centuries, through to the European Renaissance Period and beyond, we have evidence that artists have lOng cherished and employed natural ultramarine as a pigment. However, prohibitively rare and expensive as a raw material, it was always extremely difficult to extract the dazzling blue pigment, even when a relatively successful method was eventually discovered. Not until the 19th Century, when chemists cracked the problem of manufacturing ultramarine synthetically, did ultramarine blue reach the palettes of professional and amateur painters. Synthetic ultramarine now matches natural ultramtarine in terms of chemical composition, structure, hue and performance. Note de contenu : - A TORTUOUS PROCESS

Five different halochromic dyes were tested: bromocresol purple, m-cresol purple, chlorophenol red, curcumin and bromothymol blue. Preliminary dyeing was carried out on wool, polyacrylonitrile, polyester, polyamide 6.6, cotton and cellulose acetate at 100°C for 40 minutes to evaluate affinity. All the dyes showed good affinity to wool and polyamide 6.6. Cotton required a mordant phase before dyeing. Washing and light fastness were evaluated for the dyed fabrics, as well as colour changes at different pH values. Some fibres displayed good dye fastness and halochromic properties. Bromothymol blue was selected to dye polyamide 6.6 and cotton fabrics. The dyed fabrics displayed good halochromic properties across a pH range of 4 to 10. Cotton fabrics exhibited an immediate colour change; polyamide 6.6 changed colour after several minutes. An industrial dyeing process was performed on natural cellulosic fibres. The results confirmed the possibility of scaling up the process with regard to textile applications of halochromic dyes. Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL : Materials - Methods - Analysis

VioletIndex. décimale : 667.3 Teinture et impression des tissus Résumé : Accurate measurement of dye concentration in a dyebath is a basic step for dyeing process control and dyebath reuse. The dyebath usually covers a wide concentration range. In this article, a method based on multi-pathlength spectroscopy was proposed to improve the test performance for wide dye concentration. Partial least squares regression (PLSR) models were constructed on the combined pathlength spectra and evaluation metrics coefficient of determination (R2) and root mean square error (RMSE) were adopted for performance comparison. Results of the single-component experiment at different pathlengths (10, 5, 3, 2 and 1 mm) showed that for CI Acid Violet 54 and CI Acid Blue 113 the introduction of spectra at the 5 mm pathlength yielded greater performance. Further additions of lower pathlengths spectra were not as favourable as that of the 5 mm pathlength spectra for the models based on 10 mm spectra. While the upper concentration limits for three dyestuffs were raised to 0.50 g/L and 5 and 10 mm pathlengths were selected for further analysis, results demonstrated that the introduction of spectra at the 5 mm pathlength generally promoted the test performance for all three dyestuffs. Based on the results of single-component experiment, 10 and 5 mm pathlengths were eventually decided as the detection pathlengths for three-component solutions, and the concentration ranges of CI Acid Yellow 117, CI Acid Violet 54 and CI Acid Blue 113 were 0.03–0.48, 0.03–0.48 and 0.02–0.40 g/L, respectively. Results of three-component experiments suggested that evaluation metrics for the three dyestuffs were raised from 0.409, 0.409 and 0.980 to 0.957, 0.992 and 0.998, respectively, by the multi-pathlength spectroscopy technique. VioletIndex. décimale : 667.2 Colorants et pigments Résumé : This paper explain the background behind Holliday Pigments' new manganese violet grade.
Manganese violet has long been used in cosmetics, where its vivid hues, stability and excellent safety in use are much appreciated ; it has all requisite FDA and European approvals. In addition, its manufacture is safe, with the minimal harmful by-products or toxic substances. However, until Holliday Pigments' innovative new grade, formulation difficulties have restricted the range of cosmetics in which it can be included.
Managanese Violet (MnV) is a synthetic, inorganic pigment, which was first introduced around 1900. It is essentially a covalent combination of ammonia, manganese and phosphate. The standard chemical description is ammonium manganese pyrophosphate.
The chromophore, which gives the pigment its bright violet colour is tri-valent manganese, which is stabilised within the compound structure by strong coordination with the phosphate and ammonia ions.Note de contenu : - Clean manufacture
