Tannage Résumé : Non-chrome-tanned (chrome-free) leather has gradually gained commercial importance, particularly for automobile upholstery applications. UV and heat resistance are very important qualities for automobile applications. We developed an environmentally friendly finishing process that will improve the UV- and heat resistance of automobile upholstery leather. Tocopherol (Vitamin E) is a potent free radical scavenger and highly protective agent for collagen fibers against UV damage. We previously reported that the application of tocopherol to the grain layer of chrome-tanned leather improved its durability. The current study focuses on non-chrome-tanned leather made with a glutaraldehyde tanning process. We applied tocopherol to the grain layer of that leather and also studied the addition of tocopherol to the fatliquoring drums. Following exposure in a Fade-Ometer, the treated samples were evaluated by colorimetry and mechanical testing for the efficacy of UV- and heat resistance. A polarizing microscope equipped with a Berek compensator was employed to determine the birefringence of the untreated and treated leather collagen fibers to determine the treatment effects on the degree of orientation. Data showed that leather coated with tocopherol exhibited significant improvement in tensile strength retention and color fading resistance against UV radiation and heat. Leather fatliquored with tocopherol, however, did not show a similar improvement. Tannage Résumé : This research was carried out in order to detect and reduce the amount of the tanning material passing from leather into the float during post-tanning processes. In the research, the possibility of reducing the amount of unbound or weakly bound tanning materials, passing from leather into wastewater during post tanning processes, by forming a complex with a second tanning material used in a new float was examined. The feature of mineral tanning materials that enables them to form a complex with vegetable tanning materials was used for this purpose. It was proved that the amount of the mineral tanning material passing into wastewater during post tanning processes was reduced to some extent with vegetable tannin application after mineral main tannage, while the amount of vegetable tanning material passing into wastewater could be reduced in significant amounts of approximately 85% with mineral tanning material application after vegetable tannage. Langmaier, Auteur ; Milan Mladek, Auteur ; Ivan Zelinka, Auteur ; Vladimir Vasek, Auteur Année de publication : 2005 Article en page(s) : p. 119-123 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : A low cost computer-controled system to recycle chromium containing liquid and solid waste from the tanning industry is described. The mathematical model for the recycling technology is based on the chemical-physical engineering description of the heterogeneous kinetics of the process. Regressive analysis was used to determine values for the parameters in each kinetic equation from experimental data. The idea for the recycling technology lies in using the reaction of non-environmentally friendly chromium containing liquid and solid wastes and creating new products that are not toxic and can be used in other industrial applications. The proposed model was used for a simulation test and for an optimum calculation in connection with minimum operating costs of the recycling technology. The process, including the computer control system, was demonstrated with laboratory equipment using real chromium-containing liquid and solid waste obtained from a beam house.
