Résumé : |
Miniemulsion polymerization is an efficient way to generate nano sized reactor system stabilized in the continuous phase. The oil droplets dispersed in water (O/W emulsions), are processed under high shear force to increase the interfacial area by reducing the droplet size in the range of 50 nm to 500 nm. These oil droplets are separated from each other through continuous phase, acts as nano reactor for polymerization. The typical emulsions are stabilized against Ostwald ripening and collisional degradation by using surfactant and low molecular wejght highly water insoluble co-stabilizer. The droplet should have sufficient stablllty belore polymerization, which will result in 1:1 copy of droplets to particles. This method is very different from the conventional method in terms of nucleation mechanism. This engineeied method enables to create structured colloidal particles having different morphology. The miniemulsion process can be usednot only for radical polymerization but also for poly-adddion and poly-condensation to make variety of polymer, copolymer, organic-inorganic hybrid etc. The reaction starts at the individual nano sized droplets for O/W emulsions that also makes easier for solid encapsulation inside the polymeric particles. The review shows the mechanism of the process and related robustness of the polymerization in different aspects. The different ways to stabilize the droplets before polymerization has also been reviewed. |
