Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : For automotive upholstery leather, UV and heat resistance are very important qualities, particularly for non-chrome-tanned (chrome-free) leather. One of our research endeavors has focused on an environmentally friendly finishing process that will improve the UVand heat resistance of automobile upholstery leather. Both tocopherol and butylhydroxytoluene (BHT) are wellknown antioxidants commonly used in the cosmetic and food industries. Tocopherol has been reported as a potent free radical scavenger and highly protective agent for collagen fibers against UV and heat damage. Experiments were conducted by adding 1 to 5% alpha-tocopherol and mixed-tocopherol to the grain layer finishes (topcoat) of chrome-free leather. The treated samples were exposed to artificial sunlight at a high temperature for 72 hours and then evaluated for the efficacy of UV and heat resistance and by mechanical property testing for tensile strength and fracture energy. Tests using 5% alpha-tocopherol or mixed-tocopherol showed a significant improvement in color fading resistance against UV radiation and heat. We also studied the addition of BHT to the fatliquoring drums. Observation, however, showed BHT has no beneficial effect on the UV and heat resistance of finished leather. Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : X-ray fluorescence (XRF) is a rapid, often nondestructive, elemental analysis technique that has been infrequently applied to crust and finished leather characterization. XRF can suffer from moisture and matrix effects, limiting its application in certain materials. The use of effective moisture management and homogenization can minimize these effects. An Oxford Instruments Twin-X benchtop XRF spectrometer, an Oxford MESA-5000 analytical XRF spectrometer and an AMTEC XRA CR 900 instrument were employed for qualitative and quantitative assessment of crust and finished leathers. Chromium calibrations to the "standard" ASTM method showed excellent accuracy and acceptable precision for both the Oxford Twin-X and the AMTEC instrument. Qualitatively, XRF can be performed to rapidly assess type of tannage and heavy metal contamination. Quantitatively, XRF can provide (for suitably-prepared samples) analytical figures of merit (accuracy and precision) that are competitive with conventional analysis techniques. Collagen is the major protein present in the skins and hides in association with various globular proteins, viz. albumin, globulin, mucoids; and fibrous proteins such as elastin, keratin, and reticulin. The hide or skin, once flayed, has cells that are deprived of supply of oxygen and nutrients. Hides and skin are getting damaged mainly by bacteria, which are responsible for the decomposition of untanned proteins (in raw hides and during soaking), while fungi thrive on leathers containing carbohydrates, fats and proteins. We have characterized the bacteria present in skin samples and found that the bacterial strains with proteolytic and lipolytic activities were predominant. Based on the biochemical-physiological characteristics, they were identified as Gram-positive rods and cocci such as Bacillus subtilis, B. megaterium, and B. cereus and Staphylocorcus epidermidis, and S. aureus and Lactobacillus acidophilus and L. fermentum. In addition, nine strains of Micrococcus luteus and one strain as Streptococcus feacalis were also identified. Total of sixteen Gram-negative bacterial strains, 3 were identified as Neisseria, 7 as Proteus sp., and 6 as Pseudomonas sp. Qualitative assessment of the degradation of collagen fibers leading to skin damage suggested that Gram-positive organisms with proteolytic activity are mainly involved in the putrefaction of goat/ sheep skin. Tannage Résumé : Extract from the leaves of lawsonia inermis (henna), widely distributed in Sudan, has been evaluated for its utilization in the retanning of the leather and presented in this paper. Leaves of henna have been extracted for 1 hour with distilled water (1:10 w/v) at temperature above 80°C. The henna extract prepared has been used for the retanning of wet blue leathers. The effectiveness of henna extract in retanning of wet blue leathers has been compared with wattle retanning. The organoleptic properties of the leathers viz. softness, fullness, grain smoothness, grain tightness (break), general appearance, uniformity of dyeing of henna retanned leather have been evaluated in comparison with wattle retanned leathers. Henna retanning resulted in leathers with good grain tightness. Dyeing characteristics of henna retanned leathers have been found to be better than wattle retanned leathers. Also physical strength characteristics, shrinkage temperature and economic viability were noted. The effluent arising from this retanning system has been analyzed for its environmental impact.
